Jaire Roscoe Eastmond only needed one official visit to pull the trigger.
The 5-foot-10 point guard committed to the University of Denver. He committed to the Pioneers over interests from Kennesaw State, Stetson and Stephen F. Austin.
“When I was on my official visit they talked about how much they needed a point guard,” said Eastmond of his decision. “There was no point in waiting. I want a chance to play.”
Eastmond, who wants to study Forensic Science, can now focus on the upcoming season for Wheeler High. The Wildcats travel to Meadowcreek High in Norcross, GA on Saturday.
”It just feels to get this over this,” he said. “I can now just focus on the season.”
Eastmond has worked at this opportunity for a long time. Since he was in the fifth grade he has been around high level basketball. So he knows the game at a much higher level.
Every player can shoot or handle the ball, but Eastmond’s game is a little more defined.
”He can think the game beyond his years,” said Desmond Eastmond of his son. “There are only certain players who can do that.”
The elder Eastmond would know. He has coached and trained players for more than 20 years. Players like the Boston Celtics Jaylen Brown, current Duke freshman Zion Williamson and former Wheeler High standout/NBA pro Shareef Abdul-Rahim.
Seeing his son reach this point has been a journey in maturation.
”I noticed him become a man,” Eastmond said. “I watched him command respect.”
