Goldwire commits to Duke late

DURHAM, NC – Jordan Goldwire knew playing college basketball was in his future. He just never envisioned anything like this.

On Monday night, while on a visit to Duke University, he committed to the ACC program and its Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski.

“I was just like it was something I could never have dreamed of,” Goldwire said via text. “I felt that waiting was best because I never saw a clear cut favorite.”

Prior to his commitment, Goldwire was considering pledging to Eastern Kentucky but the late interest by Duke was hard to pass up. He had already taken official visits to Eastern Kentucky and Mercer.

Goldwire also had offers from Arizona State, UNLV and Rice.

The senior Norcross (Ga.) High School is a three-star prospect gives the Blue Devils a point guard it was seeking. Frank Jackson, who is not a true point guard, is uncertain to return next season as he goes through the NBA Draft process. Five-star recruit Trevon Duval has yet to make a decision on a college for next season. The No. 1-ranked point guard in the 2017 class has Duke, Baylor, Arizona, Kansas and Seton Hall. The Blue Devils were in need of a point guard.

Goldwire joins the Blue Devils recruiting class, which features two Georgia natives in Alex O’Connell, an AAU teammate, Wendell Carter and Gary Trent Jr.

“They didn’t promise me anything,” Goldwire said. “They said they needed another ball handler who would be able to run the second group. It was a great opportunity for me.”
