Shakur Poteat has always had an idea where he wanted to go. He just kept it to himself until recently.
While many athletes always dream of playing for a Power 5 school, Poteat has wanted to play for a Historically Black College or University since the ninth grade.
Poteat will get the opportunity to do so after his commitment to Bethune-Cookman on Monday. He picked the Wildcats over an offer from Emmanuel College and Wisconsin University interest.
“My parents and my AAU coaches took the team to visit HBCU’s,” Poteat said. “They always told me about the history.”
The 6-foot-2 guard, from Jones High in Orlando, had a solid senior campaign. He averaged 18 points, four assists and three rebounds a game for the Tigers.
Poteat spoke with Bethune-Cookman to Ryan Ridder. The conversation helped Poteat make a decision.
“He was so raw and real,” he said. “I just knew (Bethune) Cookman was my next home.”
