SENECA FALLS, NY – Defense wins championships.

This is a quote that pretty much got WNY Shock through the Finger Lakes Slam Fest. The Shock beat Bath BBall Club 45-34 to capture the 16U girls championship at New York Chiropractic College.

“Our biggest strength is our defense,” Shock coach George Tilton said. “The teams we played were solid. Our defense was solid.”

WNY dismissed the completion in pool play holding opponents to an average of 21 points. Things looked in control early in the finals.

The Shock set the tone of the game as its defensive stops led to easy transition baskets. WNY held a 32-14 lead midway through the second half. However, Bath was not about to just roll over in the re-match.

MaKenna Taggart, an eighth grader, found ways to create baskets and take advantage of some miscues. The Blaze cut the lead 34-27. This was as close as Bath would get the rest of the game. WNY tightened things up on the defensive end to close out the game.

Braelin Scott, from Bloomfield High, finished with a game-high 14 points. Taggart led Bath with eight points.
