GHSA: Griffins girls crowned 4A champions

Macon, GA – Winning its first Georgia High School state championship was not going to be easy for Griffin. In order to bring the cup home the Bears would have to go through a familiar oppoent: Baldwin High.

The Bears used an 8-0 to close out the game before beating Baldwin 51-47 on Wednesaday at the Macon Centerplex. This was the fourth time the teams have played this season. Griffin (27-4) can now call itself a state champion the programs first.

Zamiyah Hosley and Leah Turner nailed three-pointers respectively giving Griffin a 49-47 lead. The Bears’ defense held off the Bravettes. Leading the way for Aaliyah Duranham scored 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Bears. Turner poured in 17 points, which included hitting five 3-pointers.

Baldwin (24-9), which has three state championships in school history, was led by Janaye Walker with 21 points and 19 rebounds. Kassidy Neal chipped in with 12 points. The Bravette’s were three-peat champions in 1986, 1987, and 1988.
