Macon, GA – Wilkinson County boys basketball is back on top.
The Warriors’ history is all throughout the Georgia High School Athletic Association record books for its success on the hardwood. Wilkinson County needed a basket with less than two minutes to play and some defensive runs to beat Charlton County, 40-36, on Wednesday at the Macon Centerplex.
This is the 11th state championship in school history for WilCo and its first since 2018.
Getting to the podium looked bleak for the Warriors (25-6), who were having a bad shooting night. Wilkinson County took its first lead with less than two minutes to play. The Warriors knocked a few free throws down the stretch to get the party started in Iwrington. This was Xavier Whipple’s first as a head coach. He has eight titles as a player and an assistant coach.
Kwaveon Hill finished with 12 points for WilCo. Justin Stanley added 11 points. Jordan Jackson pulled down 10 rebounds.
Charlton County (29-3), which was making its first trip to the finals, was led by Elyiss Williams. The 6-foot-9 sophomore finished with 10 points, 20 rebounds, and six blocks before fouling out. Jarvis Wright added 10 points.
