Lemon Street Classic: McDonough escapes with a win

By Robert Alfonso Jr.

Marietta, GA – A strong third quarter helped McDonough secure a win in the Lemon Street Classic.

The Warhawks defense swarmed all over the floor disrupting Lowndes in every way possible. McDonough held off the Vikings for a 69-65 victory. This was a good bounceback win for the Warhawks.

McDonough (8-1) suffered its first defeat of the season the previous day to Buford. The Warhawks starrted the thrid quarter determined not to let this game get too far from them. They applied intense full-court pressure which rattled the Vikings poise as the Warhawks outscored them 26-15 in the quarter.

Leading the way for McDonough was Amon McDowell. The senior point guard finished with 20 points. Junior Keenan Gray contributed with 17 points. Senior Avante Nichols added 10 points to the Warhawks total.

Lowndes (7-6) continued to fight through the pressure and pace. The Vikings remained diligent on its gameplan, which was to get into the paint and nail the perimeter jumper. Samuel Shoptaw, a sophomore, scored a team-high 17 points by knocking down three 3-pointers. Senior wing Darmarcus Black had 16 points. Sophomore guard Kam Jackson poured in 12 points.
