Athens, GA – The third annual Georgia Interstate Hoops Classic brought the heat to the Classic City. This schedule was loaded with tough matchups and intense games for all to enjoy.
Some players carved their names into the record books. We also had an opportunity to see some new players make an impression for the future.
Here is a list of players who made sure no one forgets them moving forward.
Etowah’s Dimitri Angelakos loves himself some Cedar Shoals High School gymnasium. The senior guard became the classics all-time leading scorer, and all-time three-point shooter leader in makes after three games. Angelakos, who played in the event as a sophomore, has scored 72 total points while making 18 three-pointers. His best shooting single-game performance was knocking down nine triples in the event’s inaugural 2022 year. This Georgia Tech baseball commit iced the right arm after his performance. He is also getting significant interest from MLB teams. Angelakos’ performance has helped Etowah remain undefeated in the Athens event.
Greenforest’s Mike Robinson may be one of the smallest players on the roster, but he has made the largest impact. The floor general becomes the event’s first-ever back-to-back MVP—his ability to lead the Eagles with 15 points in each game. Robinson scored a team-high 15 points in this season’s win over Baldwin. He helped Greenforest to another win over Douhtery in 2023. The Eagles are undefeated in the event.
The Braves rolled into Athens looking to show Middle Georgia will have something to say in the state playoffs. This squad looked at Greenforest in the face and never flinched. Baldwin matched the Eagles blow for blow. This was the heavyweight matchup both teams needed. The Braves’ Isaiah Dennis made spectacular plays on both ends of the floor. This senior was impressive with his ability to score the ball and defend at a high level. He finished the night with 24 points. Teammate Deven Nelson had 13 points in the game. Karen Demory gave the Braves some defensive energy whenever they were on the floor. Baldwin’s defense and its fans travel well. Look for the Braves to still be in control of Region 2-AAAA.
Union Grove trailed by double-digits before clawing itself to a victory. The victory was led by Nile King, Temar Colley, and Caleb Samples. King, who won the MVP, was solid in attacking the rim and helping force defensive turnovers for easy buckets. Colley opened up the floor and the scoring from the perimeter. He nailed several fluid shots. His consistent shooting helped secure the win. Samples are a major catalyst for the Wolverines. He can fill up the basket and is a solid athlete.
