JUCO Report Showcase: The Notables

By Robert Alfonso Jr.

WOODSTOCK, GA – Walking into  Etowah High on Saturday was a chance to catch up with some junior college players. Many were incoming freshman, while others have a few years of eligibility remaining.

The JUCO Report campers played in front of a handful of coaches, who were looking to fill roster spots in the future. This event provided college programs an early look at players who they will then track in the Fall.

Here are some players who made an impression with their play.

Peyton West | Volunteer State CC showed off the ability to handle the rock through some tight spaces. He had that ball on string and would drop off dimes. His court vision was just impeccable. West has a controlled pace to his game.

Isaiah Gaines | Northwest Miss CC had a unique build, which he used to his advantage. The 6-foot-7 rebounded well outside of his area. His ability to do so came from his timing shots and positioning. He finished inside comfortably and could step out to hit a 15-foot jumper. For an interior guy, Gaines has a nice feel for the game. His development will certainly be tracked for the future.

BJ Comer | Cape Fear CC stood out just from the standpoint of being a relentless rebounder. He was explosive at grabbing the ball at its highest point. There were few single-handed rebounds. He was ambidextrous finishing inside. His activity in the open court and in transition helped create easy baskets.

Daeshawn Eaton | Howard CC is one shifty guard. He uses his angles in ways to not just great space for himself but for better passing angles. Those led to excellent decision making plays. Winning plays translate at the next level. Make sure to check in on this one.

Dawson Wilkins | East Georgia State if you look up the definition of explosive first step this man’s picture would be cropped around the word. He understands how to use his quickness and makes his way to the basket quicker than a cat avoiding traffic. There is a sense of control with his speed. The right decisions are made consistently.

Kamarie Coffey | Columbus St CC made sure you recognized his abilities on one play. He raced to the front of the rim for an explosive dunk. If you’re in the market for an athletic forward who gives it everything he has on defense, make sure to pull in to see this one.
