Alimoe Day Memorial Classic provides stage for Tri-State ballers

ALIMOE-DAY

By Robert Alfonso Jr.

NEW YORK, NY – Whenever you think of Streetball, especially New York City Streetball, the names are legendary. Joe “The Destroyer” Hammonds, Rick “Pee Wee” Kirkland, Earl “The Goat” Manigault, Rafer “Skip to My Lou” Alston along with a slew of other names, who have carved their names in the lure of NYC’s asphalt.

Not to be left out among these legends is Tyrone Evans. Streetball fans know him as “Alimoe” or the “Black Widow.” Regardless of which name rings a bell, he rocked defenders to sleep and cracked angles like a chiropractor does backs. He embarrassed players long before YouTube highlights. Unfortunately, the Harlem legend passed away in 2013 from a seizure.

While he may be physically gone, Alimoe’s name lives. For the third consecutive year, Alimoe Day Memorial Classic will take place at Colonel Young Playground (145th Street and Lenox Ave). The game, put on by Tri-State Classic, will feature some of the Tri-State areas top high school players on Sunday, June 21. The underclassman game will be played before the upperclassman.

While many of these players are too young to remember, many of them can go to the original And1 Mixtapes to see the Black Widow spin his magic. At 6-foot-7, Alimoe handled the ball like it was on a string. He could score from all three levels on the floor, including many times above the rim. His physical presence will not be on the sideline watching the game the Alimoe spirit will be there.

Here is the players scheduled to play the games.
