Solid defense, individual performances headline National Hoopfest

TAMPA, FL = The ARS Resccue/Rooter National Hoopfest had some of the country’s best high school basketball teams down in Tampa for its annual event. Here are some of the results.

University School 63, Berkeley Prep 47

Scottie Barnes and Vernon Carey Jr. Are took much to handle as it is. The host school Berkeley Prep did not have enough to handle either of them individually.

Barnes was named the MVP of the game after his 14 points, six assists and seven rebounds. The junior was the utility knife the Sharkes used to carve through Berkeley Prep’s defense.

Carey, a Duke commit, at 6-foot-10 delivered the most explosive highlight dunking on a number of defenders.

Tampa Catholic 71, The Villages 63

Despite not habing any players on its roster, Tampa Catholic makes certain it comes together at critical times. The Crusaders picked it up on defense to help shut the Buffaloes down.

The catalyst behind that collective team effort was Johni Broome. At 6-foot-8, Broome established his presence from the opening tip. He cradled any rebound within his reach and at times beyond the paint. Broome also showed a nice touch around the rim to finish with 20 points and 19 rebounds.

“We take pride in our defense,” Broome said. “We all have to take on the leadership role.”

Tampa also shared the offensive load. Kobe Knix finished with 20 points.

Tre Mann, a Florida signee, scored a game-high 25 points. Senior Brandon Farmer had 17 points. Terry Ivey, a senior, finished with 11 points.

West Oaks 67, St. Petersburgh 58

Whenever West Oaks Academy steps on the floor players will come at you from all over. They will bring the pressure on both ends of the floor.

Junior guard Shelton Miguel helped ignite the Flames in the opening day of Saturday’s event. Miguel finished with 17 points to lead West Oaks. He was named the games MVP. Noble Crawford registered a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore AJ Neal chipped with 10 points.
