Morgan County boys pick up the win late

Mount Airy, GA – Morgan County keeps its poise for a close win. The Bulldogs (2-0) used an offensive surge and defensive stops to hold off Lanier Christian Academy, 65-59, during the Battle of the Mountain Top at Habersham Central High Saturday.

Jacoby Simmons led Morgan County with 21 points. His biggest contribution was late in the game going 6-for-8 from the free-throw line to help extend the lead and eventually put the Lightning away.

The game was tied, 46-46, midway through the fourth quarter. Morgan County went on a run behind Simmons pushing the tempo, while Ryan Moore manned the interior. The Bulldogs had to find some offensive punch after Moore, who finished with 16 points, fouled out. This is when Justice Lewis stepped it up inside. The junior forward cleaned up the glass (six) and focused on finishing inside (10 points).

LCA (0-2) attempted a comeback with a full-court press, which really did not really phase the Bulldogs. The Lightning rode the efforts of Gavin Sewell-Strabala and Tate Mudd. Sewell-Strabala finished with 25 points and five rebounds. Mudd had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
