HS Boys preview: South Cobb Eagles

By Robert Alfonso Jr.

POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. – Hollis Bethea about the new things associated with South Cobb.

The Eagles’ new coach steps into a situation where the program is in good shape. Any time a coach begins a new job they come in wanting to put their fingerprints on a program. For Bethea, who has more than 20 years of coaching and teaching, he took a South Cobb job with committed players, a support system, and a fanatical basketball fanbase. He also stepped into a situation where the locker room and the hardwood are new.

South Cobb is a program dipped in tradition and built on handwork. Bethea is only looking forward to building onto the program’s history.

“They’ve had some great success over the last several years,” he said. “I am trying to build on that to be part of the success. Trying to build on the tradition that has been built.”

Last season, the Eagles finished the 2020-21 season 16-12. It was eliminated from the Georgia High School Class 6A state playoffs.

“Based on some of the systems we played in the past it is refreshing to see the guys were able to run the system,”: see said. “We are able to bring it to South Cobb, which could produce a really fun brand of basketball.”

Bethea comes to the Cobb school looking to put his fast-paced defensive system in place. A brand of basketball he has had success in the past, especially his previous coaching job at Douglas County High.
